Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Shenandoah

TOWSON, Md. - Junior Nailah Jones (Glenn Dale, Md./Parkdale) scored a career and team-high 15 points, but the Goucher College women's basketball team fell in their 2017-18 season opener on Wednesday night to Shenandoah, 72-39, at the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.

In the contest, the visiting Hornets opened up an early 25-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, eventually extending the lead out to 43-15 at halftime. In the second half, it was more of the same, but Goucher did not give in the entire night, eventually scoring 24 points in the final 20 minutes of action.

Overall, Jones led the way with her 15-point output for the evening, as she also dished out a pair of assists in the defeat. Elsewhere, both junior Nicole Wolard (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) and freshman Mya Lewis (Owings Mills, Md./Newtown) tallied 11 points, apiece.

For Wolard, it was also her career best scoring output in a game, while Lewis went into double-figures in her first collegiate contest. Wolard also pulled down eight rebounds in the defeat, as well.

Shenandoah was led in the victory by Jordan Sondrol, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

The Goucher College women's basketball team returns to action on Friday night, as they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational. On Friday, the Gophers will take on Washington (Md.) beginning at 5:30 p.m.
