Rowan Women's Basketball Begins Season With 86-76 Victory Over Delaware Valley

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 campaign with an 86-76 win over visiting Delaware Valley University on Wednesday night.

 

Guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) recorded a double-double for the Profs with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also tallied five assists and four steals. Guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) produced 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Guards Olivia Rulon (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) contributed with 12 and 10 points respectively.

 

Aggies' guard Ashley Smink (so. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) totaled 19 points. Guard/forward Danielle Skedzielewski (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) registered 12 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Lauren Moretti (fr. Sea Isle City, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) recorded 15 points while forward Olivia Gorman (fr. Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and guard Sarah Wills (so. Ambler, PA/Mt. St. Joseph Academy) added 10 apiece. Guard Morgan Mitchell (jr. Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame) dished seven assists.

 

Rowan held an early 5-4 lead in the first quarter. The Profs went on an 11-2 run to increase the advantage to 10 (16-6) with 4:43 on the clock. Rulon hit a pair of threes, Peters sank a triple and Kriley made a layup. Rowan was ahead 25-13 at the end of the period. The Profs were up 30-19 in the second before DelVal went on a 16-3 surge, taking a 35-33 lead (0:54). Gorman led the charge with seven points. Peters followed with a layup (0:40), guard Samantha Tello (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) drilled a three-pointer (0:16) and Rowan had a 38-35 edge at the intermission.

 

In the third quarter, the teams were tied at 46 after Smink's triple (6:24). The Profs ended the period with 11 of the final 15 points to take a 57-50 advantage into the fourth. Five different players scored in the stretch. The Aggies cut the deficit to five (63-58) at the 5:21 mark. Peters had a layup (5:11) and Rulon hit a shot from beyond the arc (5:03) to push the margin to 10 (68-58). After a three from Smink (4:48), Rowan iced the game with a 12-3 rally, going ahead by 16 (80-64) with 1:50 remaining. Four Profs poured in points during the run, led by center April Szymczyk's (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) five.

 

Rowan heads to the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at York College (PA) on Friday, Nov. 17 to take on Grove City College at 8 p.m.
