GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Albion College will have the No. 4 seed for next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament after taking a 61-50 loss to Calvin College inside the Van Noord Arena Wednesday night.

Evelyn Wischmeyer scored two baskets and Olivia Savage buried a 3-point shot from the corner as Albion reeled off a 7-0 run to trail by four with four minutes left in the third quarter.

It became a game of cat-and-mouse from there as Calvin would repel every time the Britons got close.

The Britons trailed by five with 4:40 to play after Oreyana Curry hit a pair from the line, but Anna Timmer and Ali Spayde provided the answer for Calvin with three-point plays that put the game out of reach.

"We got a lot of (defensive) stops, we had a lot of opportunities," Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We just didn't find a way to finish."

The Britons produced a valiant rally after trailing 18-6 at the end of the first quarter. Albion started cold, shooting 23 percent from the field, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range.

"We have to play a full 40 minutes against a team like this," Carden said. "We can't show up late because it's tough to come back even though we had opportunities."

Emily Bernas led Albion with 18 points and six rebounds. Curry also scored in double figures, finishing with 12.

Spayde led all players with 26 points.

Albion (17-7 overall and 10-5 against MIAA rivals) completes the regular season with a Saturday game at Kalamazoo College.
