PURCHASE (NY) – Manhattanville College stayed alive in the hunt for the final Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom playoff hunt as the Valiants notched a 59-55 home victory over Delaware Valley University.

Despite the setback, the Aggies (9-13, 5-6) remained tied for fourth place in the league standings as Eastern University suffered a 62-49 setback at four-time defending champion and current MAC Freedom front-runner FDU-Florham. Meanwhile, Manhattanville is now just one game back at 9-13 overall and 4-7 in the conference. DelVal hosts FDU-Florham on Saturday while Manhattanville travels to Eastern. The Aggies and Eastern meet in Doylestown next Tuesday.

DelVal went on a 9-2 run, including a pair of treys from freshman Ashley Smink, in the final four minutes of the first quarter to take a 13-6 advantage. The Valiants responded with 13 of the first 15 points of the second quarter to take a four-point advantage. They were still up two when back-to-back layups from Amber Grohowski in the final two minutes gave the Aggies a 25-23 lead at the break.

Manhattanville outscored DelVal, 15-10, in the third quarter to take three-point advantage into the fourth. The Aggies fought back and regained the lead three times, the last coming on a free throw by Smink with 5:07 to go that made it 46-45.

However, the Valiants went on a 10-2 spurt for a seven-point lead with 2:10 remaining. A pair of free throws from Smink and a layup from Danielle Skedzielewski made it a three-point contest. After two free throws by Manhattanville, Smink sank two from the charity stripe with 26 seconds left. The Valiants missed a pair of free throws, but got one of its 20 offensive rebounds on the night for another possession and Kayleigh McGuire put the game away with two foul shots with 20 ticks on the clock.

Smink finished with 23 points and five steals. Skedzielewski recorded 16 points and six rebounds while Sam Foy had nine points, eight boards and six steals.

McGuire paced Manhattanville with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Brittany Deiseso and Joiada Darnell had 12 and 11 points respectively.
