ONEONTA, NY – Senior Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) and sophomore Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) combined to score 40 of the Hawks' 64 points on Tuesday night as Hartwick defeated Utica 64-47 at Lambros Arena.
Foreman recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She pulled down seven offensive boards to help the Hawks to 15 second-chance points.
Johnson connected on five three-pointers for a game-high 21 points. She now has 50 three-pointers this season, becoming just the fourth player in Hartwick history to make 50 or more in a season.
Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and Johnson connected on early threes as 'Wick grabbed a quick 8-2 lead on the Pioneers. With the score 12-8, the Hawks scored the final eight points of the quarter, with Foreman netting six in the run, for a 20-8 advantage after the first quarter.
Hartwick opened up a pair of 15-point leads in the second quarter. Six straight points from UC trimmed it to nine at halftime, 34-25.
The hosts never led by less than 10 in the third quarter and they saw their advantage grow to 16 points, 45-29, following a Sarah Shaw (Franklin, MA/Franklin) trey. After holding a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Hawks led by double digits the rest of the night. They led by as many 17 at three points in the final 10 minutes before the final 64-47 score line.
The Hawks out-scored the Pioneers 34-20 in the paint with both teams hauling down 39 rebounds apiece. Hartwick shot 39% (25-for-65) from the field for the night. The Hawks held the Pioneers to 34% (19-for-56), while forcing 21 turnovers which were turned into 21 'Wick points.
Corbett closed the game with eight points, eight rebounds, and a game-high six steals. Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) chipped in eight points, three assists, and a pair of steals. Shaw had five points, six boards, and three blocks. Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) grabbed six rebounds and two steals.
Ashelyne Babb was the high scorer for the visitors with 18 points. She was the lone Pioneer in double figures. Ashley Mayo would contribute seven points and 10 rebounds.
Hartwick next plays at Ithaca in a showdown of two of the Empire 8 Conference's top teams on Saturday. Both the Hawks and Bombers are tied at 11-2 at the top of the league standings with three games to go in the regular season. Tip-Off is 2 p.m. from Ben Light Gymnasium in Ithaca, NY.
