MENOMONIE (February 4, 2016) - UW-Stout went on a huge 25-6 run in the second quarter and opened up a 35-19 lead by the end of the first half. Stout held on to the big gap through the second half to take a WIAC victory from No. 19 Whitewater on Alumni Day.
Kyncaide Diedrich dropped 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on her way to a double-double, while Jenna Goldsmith scored a game high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and blocking five shots.
With many alumni in the stands, Stout's (7-14, 3-7 WIAC) defense was what propelled them to victory on Alumni Day. Neither team shot well in the first quarter, Stout 41 percent and Whitewater (18-3, 8-2 WIAC) 17 percent, making 5-of-6 free throws. Stout did end on top 12-11 after a Bailey Diersen lay in. Stout then was poised for a big run in the second.
Stout opened up 6-0 in the second after Diedrich hit a fast-break layup that was beautifully bounce-passed by Diersen. Becky Fesenmaier then hit a coast-to-coast lay-in after a big steal, putting Stout up by 22-16. Offensive rebounding also played a part in the run, Emily Jacques scored four points in the second on a offensive-rebound layup, and an offensive-rebound followed by two free throws.
Stout was up big 35-19 at the end of the first half.
The second half included much of the same, Whitewater was held to poor shooting by Stout, and Stout piled on the points. At one point, the Blue Devils opened up to 17 on a Fesenmaier jumper assisted by Diersen. They then opened it up to 19 in the fourth quarter after a Goldsmith free throw, and then 20 points when Courtney Oleson scored the final bucket, her first basket as a Blue Devil.
Stout did all of this without making a single 3-pointer, but the Blue Devils didn't need to, shooting only eight 3-point attempts. Stout has scored at least one 3-pointer in every game since midway throughthe 2014 season. Stout also held a team shooting under 30 percent for the second time this season when they held St. Mary's University to 29 percent in the second game of the season.
Diersen also put in a good game for Stout, scoring five points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing off five assists. Jacques also put in valuable minutes, scoring a career high nine points and grabbing five rebounds.
Whitewater's Reilly Stewart scored 17 points, making three 3-pointers, but all of those came over the first three quarters. Needing to play catch-up, Whitewater tossed just about anything up in the final quarter, shooting only 11 percent in the final stanza.
Stout now controls the sixth seed in the WIAC, and will look to improve on their WIAC record as they head to UW-River Falls on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. at the Karges Arena., looking to avenge an earlier season loss.
