Gwynedd Mercy Humbles Highlanders

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball defeated Cairn University, 65-37, on Wednesday evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup.

Nicole Dombrowski led the well-balanced charge, filling up the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Julianna Hoisington and Charlotte Kucowski each added 10 as GMercyU improved to 10-10 and 8-3 in conference play.

The Griffins would lead from start to finish jumping out to an early 29-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. GM started the game on a 5-0 run thanks to a Hoisington three pointer for the game's first basket. Gwynedd would use an 8-0 spurt thanks to a pair of Dombrowski buckets for a 16-4 lead midway through the quarter. Back-to-back triples by Hoisington and Marissa Sandone would spark a 10-0 run to end the quarter.      

Gwynedd would take a 41-19 lead into the halftime break. Kucowski would score three-straight baskets for the Griffins to give GM their largest lead 39-15 in the quarter. Hoisington lead all scorers with 10 at the break while Dombrowski chipped in nine on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Griffins held the Highlanders scoreless in the third quarter taking a 52-19 lead after three frames. Kuckowski scored four in the quarter to give her 10 for the game. Five different players scored for GMercyU in the fourth quarter highlighting 12 total for the contest.

Gwynedd held Cairn to 12-of-48 (25%) from the floor and forced 23 Highlander turnovers. The Griffins shot 28-of-72 (39%) connecting on six three pointers.

Cairn (7-11, 4-7 CSAC) out-rebounded the Griffins, 46-40, Peyton Emerick grabbed six to lead the Highlanders. EJ Hartzler led Cairn with eight points with a pair of three pointers.

The Griffins will continue their home stretch when they welcome Immaculata on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip.
