Westfield State Rolls Through Fitchburg, 108-55

FITCHBURG, Mass. –    Fourteen players scored for Westfield State, led by Lucy Barrett's 17, as the Owls unloaded on Fitchburg State in a 108-55 win over the Falcons in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

Westfield won its 16th straight MASCAC game, dating back to last season, in improving to 13-6 overall and 7-0 in the MASCAC.  The Owls, who rank second in the nation in scoring offense, topped the century mark for the sixth time this season.

The Owls outsprinted the Falcons early, leading 26-15 after the opening quarter, then outscored Fitchburg 36-16 in the second quarter to salt the game away early, as Westfield led 62-31 at the half.

For Westfield State, sophomore Lucy Barrett (Mt. Greylock/Williamstown, Mass.)  finished with game-high 17 points, three rebounds and two steals, while senior Kirsy Segarra (Holyoke, Mass.) chipped in with 15 points, two rebounds and three steals for the Owls.  Jill Valley (Mahar/Orange, Mass.)  added 14 points and seven steals for the owls, and sophomore Lauren Carnevale (Pittsfield, Mass.) had one of her strongest games as an Owl with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Fitchburg State was paced by freshman Kyra Rose with a game-leading 17 points, ten rebounds, two assists, three blocks and four steals, while senior Shabeli Villa added 12 points, two caroms, one assist and two steals.

Westfield's pressure defense limited Fitchburg State to 30.5% (18-for-59)shooting from the field and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from beyond the arc, while Westfield State finished 43.8% (39-of-89) overall and 8-for-32 (25.0%) from three point range.  

The Owls forced 36 Fitchburg State turnovers and came up with 22 steals, getting 41 of their 108 points off of turnovers.

Fitchburg State (8-10, 1-6 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Lasell College to take on the Lasers for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Westfield State (13-6, 7-0 MASCAC) will visit Williams College on Monday at 7 p.m.
