LADY MONARCHS DEFEATED BY DESALES 77-47
CENTER VALLEY, PA --- The DeSales University women's basketball team scored the first 17 points of the game and then used a 13-0 run to begin the second quarter to defeat King's College 77-47 on Wednesday night at Billera Hall in Center Valley.
The Bulldogs improve to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom with the victory. King's falls to 3-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
The Monarchs had a rough start to the game as they missed their first six shots and turned the ball over five times in the first six minutes. However, they responded with three consecutive three-pointers by Shae Grim, Kayla Feairheller, and Erin Schmidt to cut the deficit to 11 points at 20-9 with 2:45 left in the quarter. After a layup by the Bulldogs, Schmidt knocked down another three, and then Feairheller recorded a steal and knocked down her second three of the game to bring the Monarchs within seven points. DeSales ended the quarter with a layup to take a 24-15 lead.
In the second quarter the Lady Monarchs shooting woes on the night hampered their ability to continue their comeback as they shot just 8.3 (1-12) percent from the field as the Bulldogs outscored them 20-4 in the quarter to take a 44-19 halftime lead.
King's scored the first six points of the second half on an Olivia Hoffman jumper, one of two made free throw attempts from Alexis Steeber, and a three-pointer from Feairheller to cut the advantage to 44-25 with 7:32 remaining in the quarter. Unfortunately that was as close as King's would get. The Bulldogs outscored King's 16-10 the remainder of the third quarter and 17-12 in the fourth to come away with a 77-47 victory.
Kayla Feairheller equaled her season-high in points and steals to lead King's. She scored 15 points, recorded four steals, and grabbed four rebounds. Erin Schmidt and Rebecca Prociak scored nine points each while Shae Grim had six. Olivia Hoffman and Sara Wolbert recorded seven rebounds each. The Lady Monarchs shot a season-low 23.7 (14-59) percent from the field but found some success from beyond-the-arc as they made a season-high eight three-pointers while shooting 38.1 percent. Another positive for King's is the team committed a season-low 14 turnovers.
DeSales was led by Morgan McCollian with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Leandra Sterner scored 12 points and Bridget Walsh grabbed 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs held a huge advantage on the boards grabbing 59 rebounds compared to 34 by King's. DeSales shot 39.7 (29-73) percent from the field, 35.3 (6-17) percent from beyond-the-arc, and 68.4 (13-19) percent from the free throw line.
King's will look to rebound on Saturday when they host Manhattanville College in McGrane Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. The Valiants defeated King's 57-56 on January 14th in Purchase, N.Y.
