William Paterson Women’s Basketball Pulls Away from Rutgers-Camden in Fourth Quarter, 63-56

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (9-7, 4-5 NJAC) outscored Rutgers-Camden (9-6, 3-5 NJAC) by 13 points during the second half for a 63-56 victory Jan. 14

 

Freshman guard Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River) scored a game-best 18 points, while freshman guard Kristina Ulrich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) finished with six rebounds, four steals and a season-high 17 tallies. Senior forward Janea Clark (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) pulled down 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) had seven steals.

 

The Scarlet Raptors opened up a 26-13 advantage with 2:56 remaining in the second quarter, but five different Pioneers combined to score 11 of the final 15 points of the half to cut it to a 30-24 margin at the intermission.

 

Rutgers-Camden again stretched it back to double digits (36-26, 5:39) before a 12-2 Pioneer burst, capped by two Alliera McCoy (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) free throws, knotted the score at 38-38 with 2:23 left in the third period. An Ulrich layup 80 seconds later allowed WP to enter the final period with a 40-38 advantage.

 

William Paterson never relinquished the lead, surging ahead by as many as 11 (52-41, 3:31) during the final quarter.

 

Junior forward/center Michelle Obasi led Rutgers-Camden with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomore guard Gabby Greene scored 12 tallies, and junior guard Jovan Childers added 10 points and eight boards.

 

The Pioneers transformed a 27-16 turnover edge into a 23-9 advantage in points scored off the miscues. WP (18-21, .857) also more than doubled up the Scarlet Raptors (7-9, .778) at the free-throw line.

 

William Paterson will compete at Ramapo Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 5:30 p.m.
