KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The No. 25 Trine women's basketball team picked up its 12th straight win on Wednesday night with a 78-48 victory over Kalamazoo. The Thunders' win streak ties for second best in school history with the team from 1988.
Trine continues to turn in its best start in school history and improves to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Kalamazoo falls to 2-12 overall and 1-5 MIAA.
This was the 10th time this season that the Thunder held its opponents to 50 points or less. Trine opponents are averaging only 48.7 points per game this season.
Kalamazoo took advantage of a slow start by the Thunder and jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the game. Midway through the quarter, Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) put the Thunder on the board with a jump shot. Trine worked its way back and tied the quarter at 15 all going into the second. The Thunder outrebounded Kalamazoo 13-8.
The Thunder kicked into gear in the second quarter outscoring the Hornets 21-12 to take a 36-27 lead into halftime.
Trine kicked up its defense in the third quarter. The Thunder opened with an 8-0 run and followed with another 8-0 run a few minutes later. Trine outscored Kalamazoo 20-6.
Eight players scored for Trine in the fourth quarter. The Thunder was led by Hayley Martin with nine points. Trine sealed its win outshooting Kalamazoo 22-15 in the fourth.
Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) led the Thunder with 19 points and a career high 12 rebounds for her first double double of the year. Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) totaled 12 points and hit double digits for the fourth time this year. Dawson added 11 points, 8 rebounds and had three steals. 12 different players scored for the Thunder and 33 points came off the bench.
Kalamazoo was led by Suzanne Miller with 15 points. Miller sank a game-high three three pointers. Sidney Wall added eight points for the Hornets, while Danielle Simon notched seven.
Trine returns home this weekend when it play host to Alma for a 1 p.m. game at Hershey Hall. Saturday is the Thunder's Free-For-All Community Day and the Thunder men will play at 3 p.m. against Hope.
