Covenant rallies in the second half for a 69-62 victory

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 3, 2017) – Visiting Covenant rallied from 17 points down in the third quarter to defeat the Sewanee women's basketball team 69-62, Tuesday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The Scots took their first lead since early in the second quarter when Rachel Price hit a free throw with 1:44 left. From there, Covenant never let go of the lead. In fact, Covenant's previous advantage was early in the second quarter before Sewanee built its largest lead, 17 points, with 8:27 to go in the third.

Early on, Covenant jumped out to a 5-0 lead, before Sewanee answered back. The Tigers led by as much as nine in the opening quarter after making 43.8 percent of their shots. Covenant eventually rallied over the last 2:47 of the first to pull to within two, 18-16.

In the second quarter, Sewanee's offense continued to roll. The Tigers made 66.7 percent of their overall shots and three-point attempts, which helped the purple and gold lead by 13 at halftime.

That set up the comeback by the Scots in which Covenant outscored Sewanee in the second half, 39-19.

Individually, Bella Taylor led Sewanee with 18 points, five steals, and three assists. Fellow sophomore guard Sue Kim also played well with 16 points, seven assists, and three steals. The final Tiger in double figures was Corey Caulder, who added 11 points, seven rebounds, and a steal.

Joanna Smith led Covenant and all players with 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Sewanee now returns to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a road game at Berry Friday night.
