BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University doubled its 10-point halftime cushion during the 3rd quarter on the way to a 78-55 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball win over the University of New England on Tuesday evening (Jan. 3) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Golden Bears came out on top for a seventh straight outing, improving to 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in the CCC. The Nor'easters fall to 6-4 overall, 3-1 in league action.
Emily Anderson paced the visitors with 14 points, while Aliyah Brito tallied 13 and six rebounds. Dorothy O'Neill, Sammie Battaini, and Sammie Olson combined for 31 points -- along with Anderson, the four accounted for all 10 of the Western New England's three-pointers.
UNE received a game-high 19 points out of Alicia Brown, who also had six rebounds and three assists. Ashley Coneys went for nine points and six boards; Sadie Nelson had eight points (all in the 1st quarter) and seven caroms. Olivia Allrich pulled in eight rebounds to help her side establish a 38-34 edge on the glass.
WNEU connected at a 46 percent clip (24 of 52) on field goals for the night, and converted 20-of-24 at the line. The Nor'easters, meanwhile, made just 31 percent (19 of 61) from the floor, and left nine freebies on the table (11 of 20).
Less than two minutes into the contest, the hosts had an 8-2 lead, but the Golden Bears finished the period on a 9-2 run to gain a 19-15 advantage after the 1st frame.
WNEU stretched the gap to nine (25-16) in the 2nd, before Brown and Coneys registered UNE's next 12 points for get their squad back within three (31-28). However, the visiting side got points from five different players down the stretch into the midway break to extend to a 43-33 lead. O'Neill notched all of her 11 points during the opening 20 minutes.
The Nor'easters went cold in the 3rd, coming up empty on all 10 of their shot attempts, and Western New England turned the spread into 20 points (58-38) by the end of the stanza. The margin was no less than that the rest of the way.
Both teams hit the road on Thursday (5:30 p.m.), with the Golden Bears visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology (0-4 CCC) and UNE heading for Roger Williams University (4-0 CCC).
