Lightning Fall to SUNY Poly in Coaches vs. Cancer Semifinals, 78-72

Bronx, N.Y. -- The Lehman College women's basketball team fought back in the second half, but they would eventually fall to SUNY Polytechnic, 78-72, Thursday afternoon as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout at the APEX Center.

With the loss, the Lightning (3-7) will play in the consolation against Alvernia at 2:00 p.m. The Wildcats (9-0) will play York (Pa.) in the tournament finals tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. 

York defeated Alvernia in the first game of the day 90-33 in the first semifinals. Four players scored in double figures for the Panthers as they shot 56.1% from the field.

Krystal Pearson led Lehman with 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Marika Gordon also posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 19 boards, while Lynda Fields (16 points) and Amely Del Rosario (17) each poured in double figures. Shakia Artist swatted six shots along with eight rebounds and eight points in a losing effort.

Kristaijah Jackson secured a double-double in the victory for the Wildcats with 23 points and 19 rebounds, and Shelby Kralik fell a rebound short of a double-double (16 points,  nine boards). Stevie Ray (15) and Taylor Aybar (13) each hit three three-pointers, and Ray dished out a team-best four assists.

Poly would take a 43-35 lead into halftime, but Lehman would chip away in the third quarter after being down nine points. They would score 13 of the final 18 points in the stanza to trail by only one point at 57-56 after Fields hit the layup as time expired.

Too many missed opportunities in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference, as the Lightning could only hit 6-of-24 from the field in the final frame. The Wildcats went 44.4% (8-for-18) in the fourth and would clamp down on defense to close out the win.
