FRANKLIN, Ind.—The Trine women's basketball team picked up its eighth straight win on Wednesday afternoon when it defeated Franklin 66-47.
The Thunder improves to 9-1 overall, which ties the 1996-97 team for the best start in program history. Franklin falls to 4-5 with the loss.
Trine jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and lengthened it lead to 33-18 after the first half. Sophomore Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) led Trine with eight points, while freshman Tashayla Sutorius (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) added seven.
The Thunder outscored Franklin 19-13 in the third quarter, but the Grizzlies scored 16 points to Trine's 14 in the fourth. Kayla Freeman (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central) grabbed a team high seven points in the second. Sutorius and Martin each added six.
Martin totaled a career high 14 points in the game, while Sutorius also added career high numbers with 13 points. Taylor Cole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd) had a game high four steals to move into a tie for 10th in team history with 148 career steals.
Franklin was led by Kayle Comer with 11 points, while Mandy Fisher added 10. Emily Alfrey grabbed a team high five rebounds.
The Thunder returns to action on Thursday when it will play at Hanover. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
