LA VERNE, Calif. – Grace Douglas scored a career-high 29 points, making 6-6 from three-point range, to lead visiting Whitworth to a 90-70 win at La Verne in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night.

Douglas' effort helped the Pirates (4-5) reach season-highs for point total and shooting percentage, both from the field and from beyond the arc.

La Verne (0-9) shot out of the gate fast, searching for its first win of the season.  The Leopards made their first two three-point attempts and upped the lead to 10-2 on Brianna Bishop's basket three and a half minutes into the game.  La Verne took its largest lead of 21-12 after a three-pointer by Faye Osborne before finishing the quarter ahead 21-14.

But then Whitworth caught fire, outscoring the Leopards 36-12 in the second quarter.  The point total is the highest ever for the Pirates in any single quarter since women's basketball changed to a four-quarter format.  Whitworth made 16 of 22 shots from the field (72.7%) with Douglas scored 13 of her points in the second period and Callie Harwood adding a dozen.

La Verne was able to trim the margin to 65-54 late in the third quarter, but Douglas answered with a three-pointer to stem the run.  The Leopards would not get any closer the rest of the way.  Harwood's late basket gave the Pirates their largest lead of the game (88-65).

Douglas made 11 of 13 shots from the floor, including the 6-6 from beyond the arc.  She surpassed her previous career high of 23 points set earlier this season in a win over UC Santa Cruz.  Harwood added 23 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds.  Erika Kuehn finished with 15 points in her first career start.  Jessica Thoens dished five assists.  Whitworth finished the game 39-72 (54.2%) from the floor, including 8-12 (66.7%) from three-point range.  The Pirates also ended the game with a 46-33 advantage in rebounds.

Bishop and Noelle Cobb led La Verne with 15 points each.  The Leopards were held to 25-62 (40.3%) from the field.  ULV got to the free throw line 26 times, compared to only eight free throws for the Pirates.  But the Leopards were only able to convert on 15 of those (57.7%).

Whitworth will return to action on Thursday when the Pirates open the Poet Classic against host Whittier College at 2:00 pm.
