MIAMI, FL – Eastern University outscored Hartwick 19-11 over the final six minutes to down the Hawks 68-60 on Monday at the HoopsMIA D3 Holiday Classic in Miami, FL. The Hawks close out 2016 with an overall mark of 3-5.
Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) led the Hawks with 16 points. Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) each added eight points.
Neither team led by more than three points in the opening quarter as the Hawks took a 10-9 lead after 10 minutes. The Eagles led by as many as 12 points, 23-11, but an 18-3 Hartwick run to close the second quarter gave the Hawks a three-point, 29-26 lead at halftime.
Hartwick held onto the lead for much of the third quarter before Eastern grabbed a 42-41 advantage heading into the final quarter. A free throw from LeeAnne Green (Windsor, CT/Watkinson School) evened the score at 49 with just over six minutes remaining in the game, but the Eagles netted the next seven points to jump ahead and the Hawks got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Hartwick made 35.1% (20-for-57) of its shots in the contest and 35.3% (6-for-17) from three-point range. Eastern shot 38.9% (21-for-54) from the field.
Green and Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) scored seven points apiece for the Hawks. Sarah Shaw (Franklin, MA/Franklin) and Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) each scored six.
Taylor Price led the Eagles with 20 points. Emily Lavin added 17 points and Regie Robinson contributed 16.
Hartwick is off until Tuesday January 3 when it opens up Empire 8 play at Elmira beginning at 6 p.m.
