PLYMOUTH, Wisconsin -- A 16-point deficit was cut to four, but host Lakeland University held on for the 74-67 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win over Alverno College Saturday afternoon inside Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Inferno (2-6, 2-2 NACC) trailed by 12 entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Muskies 12-4 to open the period as a pair of Donna Zehner free throws made it 54-50 with six minutes to play.
Lakeland (5-5, 3-2) quickly increased the lead back to 11, but seven straight Alverno points capped off by a Mackenzie Mathies 3-pointer got it back to four with just under three minutes left.
The Muskies made their free throws down the stretch and held off the Inferno's comeback in the fourth quarter where the visitors scored 29 points.
Karli Selear was one of four Alverno players in double figures and led the team with a career-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the 3-point arc.
Mathies was 5-of-12 from long range for 15 points, Gabby Hood added 15 and seven assists while Katelyn Bartlett chipped in 11.
Zehner corralled a career-best 17 rebounds as the Inferno outrebounded the hosts 40-34.
The Muskies shot 48 percent from the field and limited Alverno to 38 percent despite an impressive 53-percent shooting performance in the second half.
Miranda Jacobson led Lakeland in scoring with 21 points while Rachel Stankevich added 18 and Kayla Clark had 16.
The Inferno's 11 3-point baskets made were just one off the single-game school record done so on two occasions, most recently in the 2014-15 season against Concordia University Chicago.
Alverno returns home for its next contest a week from today as it hosts Benedictine University at 8 p.m.
