ALFRED, N.Y. – The Keuka College Women's Basketball team overcame a five-point halftime deficit as they defeated Alfred State College 55-54 on Saturday afternoon.
Keuka College (2-4, 0-3 NEAC) has nearly a month off until their next game for the holiday break. The Wolves will return to action on January 7 as they travel to Cazenovia College.
Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, N.Y. / Tupper Lake) led Keuka College with 14 points. She was joined in double figures by fellow senior Courtney Boyea (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay), who finished with 11 points. Freshman Niki Templeton (Livonia, N.Y. / Livonia) led the Wolves with a career-high 11 rebounds and Tiffany Binion (Rochester, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili) added three blocks in the win.
Keuka College's defense was on display on Saturday as they allowed Alfred State to go only 22-76 from the field and 1-22 from three point territory.
Courtney Boyea drained a three in to tie the game at 4-4 in the opening minutes against Alfred State. The Pioneers responded, however and led 16-13 after the first quarter.
The Wolves increased their defense in the early minutes of the second quarter and turned that defense into offense. A 9-0 run by Keuka highlighted the quarter. It was capped twice by good defensive plays leading to fast-break layups by Niki Templeton and Arianna DeNault (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker), giving Keuka a 25-22 lead with 3:44 left in the half. Keuka would be held scoreless for the remainder of the half, however, as the Pioneers closed with eight unanswered points to lead 30-25 at the half.
Keuka College came out of the halftime break fast, scoring the first eight points of the half to regain the lead, 33-30. Once again Alfred State put a run together to take the lead back from the Wolves. A triple by Boyea tied the game back up and a layup by Stuart gave Keuka a 40-38. The Pioneers tied the game at 40 in the final minutes and the game would go to the final quarter with the two teams level at 40-40.
Alfred State took a quick 44-40 lead over Keuka College. The Wolves responded with seven unanswered to take the lead at 47-44. After the Pioneers tied the game at 47-47, Keuka scored five straight to take their final lead of the game. Alfred State made a three in the final seconds, their first of the game, but it was not enough as Keuka College defeated Alfred State 55-54 on Saturday.
