ST. DAVIDS, Pa. -- Emily Martin worked hard for her sixth double-double of the season and Elizabethtown's defense stepped up late in the fourth quarter to help the visiting Blue Jays hold off Eastern, 52-49, Saturday in a matchup of 5-1 teams.

E-town held the Eagles without a point for nearly nine minutes covering the last 2:14 of the third quarter and first 6:28 of the fourth, but couldn't breathe easy until freshman guard Lydia Lawson picked off an Amber Anderson pass in the final five seconds.

Lawson recorded two of her three steals in final quarter, including one of the Jays' three in the final three minutes. Abby Beyer and Emma Hoesman also came up with thefts to help Elizabethtown (6-1) overcome 2-of-16 shooting in the period.

Though E-town kept Eastern off the board for almost nine minutes, it could not take advantage offensively.

A pair of Martin free throws had the Blue and Gray ahead 45-40 with 1:19 left in the third, but the Jays went scoreless during their next eight possessions spanning more than five minutes.

Amanda Riiff sank a 3-pointer from the left corner with 3:32 to go --just one of two for the Eagles on the afternoon-- to bring Eastern within 46-43 and the Blue Jays immediately took a 10-second backcourt violation all of a sudden putting their lead in peril.

Hoesman snagged the ball right back for E-town, picking Taylor Price's pocket and going coast-to-coast for a 5-point lead. The Jays got caught watching, however, and Eastern quickly moved the ball back down the court to find standout 1,000-point scorer Emily Lavin for an easy lay in.

Martin scored two of her game-high 19 points on a layup with 2:05 remaining. Hoesman, who had four points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal in the fourth quarter, coolly buried two free throws with 48 seconds left and the Jays holding a 1-point lead.

Martin scored 19 points and bested her season average with 14 boards. The Lancaster Catholic product's double-double was her sixth in seven games this season and 26th career.

The rest of the offense came by committee for E-town. Hoesman had nine points, Mikayla Ruth seven and seven boards, Beyer six and Lawson five. Elizabethtown was limited to 28.3% shooting (17-of-60), and made just 1-of-14 3-point attempts, but the Jays were a brilliant 81.0% from the charity stripe, knocking down 17-of-21 tries.

While the offense may not have been humming Saturday, the defense did its job and Martin was at the forefront of those efforts, too.

Martin blocked a season-high five shots, increasing her career total to 119. The senior is nine blocks shy of tying Abbie Fabian for third most in program history. She also held Lavin in check, holding the Eastern star to 10 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-13 shooting, though Lavin had a game-high six blocks.

Regie Robinson stepped up in place of Lavin for the Eagles, scoring 18 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. Taylor Price had 13 points and nine boards for the hosts, who got 47 of their 49 points from four players.

Eastern shot 38.5% (20-of-52), but totaled 20 giveaways and lost the battle on the glass 40-37. The Eagles allowed 14 Blue Jay offensive rebounds.

Elizabethtown will turn around to host Stevenson Sunday afternoon at 4.
