Centre rallies for a 65-62 win

DANVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 3, 2016)  Southern Athletic Association host and rival Centre rallied back from an early deficit to edge the Sewanee women's basketball team, 65-62, Saturday, inside Alumni Gymnasium.

After both teams traded the lead early in the first quarter, Sewanee jumped back in front at 9-7 after a Bella Taylor jumper. From there, Sewanee outscored the Colonels 6-3 the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 15-10 lead at the end of one. 

The Tigers then extended their advantage to as much as nine points after Taylor and Corey Caulder made back-to-back field goals to start the second. After another Taylor layup with 8:19 left in the first half, Centre answered with a 12-6 run to end the quarter.

From there, Sewanee and the Colonels traded the lead eight times in the third before a Marlee Smith free throw with two seconds left tied the contest at 44-44 at the end of the quarter.

In the final 10 minutes, the score remained close. Sewanee took its largest lead down the stretch, four points, when Caulder hit a three with 5:43 to play. After Centre responded, Caulder hit another three, which tied the contest at 60-60, with 2:03 left. From there, a Day Vance layup and a Caroline Andreassen three pushed the Colonels in front 65-60 with 49 seconds left.

Taylor answered back for Sewanee with a layup on the Tigers' next possession. Sewanee got the ball back one final time, however, a three by Sue Kim at the buzzer missed. 

Overall, Sewanee shot the ball well. The Tigers made 44.6 percent of their attempts. The purple and gold also forced 18 Centre turnovers but were undone by the Colonels' outside shooting. Centre made 50 percent of its three-point attempts along with outrebounding Sewanee, 40-25.

Individually, Caulder and Taylor led four Tiger starters in double figures with 15 points. Senior Savannah Rose added 14 points and six rebounds while Hannah McCormack pitched in 10 points, two rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Vance paced Centre with a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds.

After seven straight road games to start the season, Sewanee will finally play a game inside Juhan Gymnasium with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Berea next Saturday.
