Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 73-50 victory over Aurora University (Ill.) Saturday night at the Cornell College (Iowa) Classic in the Multi-Sport Center. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season while the Spartans drop to 0-3.
UWL improved to 2-0 all-time versus Aurora (Ill.). The Eagles earned a 59-38 victory over the Spartans in 2009-10.
The Eagles started the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back. A Rachel Atchison three-pointer came between two Elise DeNoyer lay-ups, and after an Aurora (Ill.) free throw, a three-point-play from Alyssa Clemment made it 10-1 with 7:40 left in the first quarter. A pair of free throws by DeNoyer with :08 remaining gave UWL a 20-13 lead after one period.
Midway through the second quarter, UWL went on a 9-0 run, capped by an Atchison lay-up to give the Eagles a 38-21 advantage. A three-point field goal from Atchison at the buzzer gave UWL its biggest lead of the game at halftime, 45-24.
UWL grew the lead to as many as 30 points in the third quarter as Sydney Kannel's jumper with 4:19 left in the period made it 57-27. The teams traded three-point baskets the remainder of the frame, with two from the Eagles' Delaney Schoenenberger to make it 63-33 after three quarters.
Aurora (Ill.) started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run, but the Spartans could get no closer than 22 points the rest of the game.
UWL shot 42.2% from the field, including 40.0% (eight-of-20) from three-point range, and 64.7% (11-of-17) at the free throw line. DeNoyer recorded a double-double for the Eagles, scoring 23 points and adding 10 rebounds. Schoenenberger added 12 points for UWL while Atchison scored 11 points while adding three steals. Clemment and Sierra Watrud led UWL with four assists each.
Aurora (Ill.) shot 32.0% from the field, including 33.3% (six-of-18) from three-point range, and 57.1% (12-of-21) at the free throw line. Alyssa Brems had 11 points for the Spartans, while Adriana Ramirez added 10 points and nine rebounds.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, November 22 hosting Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 5 p.m.
