Waltham, Mass.--Senior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) scored 15 points as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team dropped a 103-68 decision to Westfield State in the opening game of the 2016 Brandeis Invitational played at Auerbach Arena on Friday evening. 

 

Moore led the way for RIC (1-1) with 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while freshman center Jessica Brielmaier (West Greenwich, RI) came off the bench to record 15 points and six boards. Freshman guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) notched seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the setback. Junior guard Jessa Rubera (Newton, MA) pitched in with eight points in her first action of the season.

 

Senior guard Jill Valley (Orange, MA) paced Westfield State (1-1) with a game-high 30 points, five steals and three assists, while senior guard Alyssa Darling (Palmer, MA) was also in double-figures with 18 points and three assists off the bench.

 

Westfield State led 21-13 at the end of the first quarter and took its first double-double lead of the contest when a three-pointer by Valley made the score 24-13 with 9:03 left in the first half. Despite trailing by 15 points early in the second quarter, RIC responded and cut the lead to five, 30-25, on a Rubera trey with 5:00 left in the stanza. The Owls then closed out the half on a 17-5 run to take the 47-30 lead heading into halftime.

 

Westfield State continued to build on its lead throughout the third quarter and took an 80-55 advantage after three quarters of play.  The Owls led by as many as 35 points late in the contest before cruising to the 103-68 victory.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will take on Wentworth in the consolation game of the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 19 (Noon).
