Albion scores opening night victory

ALBION, Mich. – Guards Oreyanna Curry and Tierra Orban combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter as Albion College pulled out a 67-57 victory over Anderson University on the opening night of the women's basketball season.

D'Anjrea Allen, who finished the night with 14 points, scored baskets 15 seconds apart as Anderson seized a 49-44 lead with 8:32 to play.

Anderson managed only four baskets the rest of the way as Albion forced a number of turnovers in the backcourt. Orban provided the highlight of the night when she scored a pair of layups off turnovers as Albion forged a 56-51 lead with five minutes remaining.

"Staying in the press wore them down," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We created turnovers which led to easy baskets. Tierra is a blue-collar player who works really hard. She takes pride in her defense.

"Being the first game I could tell there were nerves," she added. "We need to get better, but I'm happy we came out with a win. Free throws were an issue for us (as Albion went 16-of-30 from the line)."

Curry led all players with 17 points, and Orban added 10.

Albion will travel to Wooster, Ohio, for Saturday and Sunday games in the Nan Nichols Classic. The Britons will square off against Capital University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
