QUINCY, Mass. -- Up by five late in the 3rd-quarter, No. 18 University of New England went on a 14-4 run over three minutes to stretch the gap and finished off a 76-61 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory over Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday evening (Feb. 16) at the Lahue PE Center.
Winners of 16 in-a-row, the nationally-ranked Nor'easters improve to 21-3 overall and 17-0 in the CCC. The Lions, who have dropped the last 16 meetings against UNE, fall for the third straight outing back to 13-11 (8-9 CCC).
Alicia Brown paced the visitors with 19 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. Lauren Hayden added 16 points and five boards, while Meghan Gribbin tallied 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Alanna Vose contributed 10 points and six caroms for UNE, which shot 47 percent from the field in the game.
For Eastern Nazarene, reserve Jessica Franco hit a trio from deep in the opening stanza and finished with 17 points (5 3-pointers) to go with six rebounds. Jaysa Cooper had 15 points and seven boards, and BreAnna Fraser notched nine points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
The Lions posted a 44-36 advantage on the glass but were held back by 34 percent field-goal shooting and 22 turnovers. The Nor'easters converted those possessions into 26 points going the other way.
Brown dialed up seven points at the start to help establish an 11-2 lead, and that spread (20-11) remained after 10 minutes. ENC made 9-of-17 shot attempts in the 2nd and got to within one on three occasions before settling on a 34-31 deficit at the midway break.
UNE surged to 26 points behind 11-of-17 accuracy in the frame coming out of intermission. Gribbin, who registered half (13) of those points, scored nine in the last two minutes as Big Blue extended a 49-44 cushion to 12 (60-48).
The Nor'easters chalked up the first three points of the 4th to make the gap 15 -- Eastern Nazarene could not get any closer than 12 the rest of the way.
UNE will wrap the regular-season on Saturday (1 p.m.) against Salve Regina University (9-8 CCC).
