No. 17 women's basketball falls to Blugolds in fourth quarter

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – UW-Eau Claire overcame a nine-point deficit after three quarters to defeat the No. 17 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team 59-57 on Saturday evening at Zorn Arena.

UW-Stevens Point (17-6, 8-4 WIAC) took a 47-38 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring UW-Eau Claire (11-12, 6-6 WIAC) 21-8 in the third. However, the Blugolds flipped the script in the fourth by outscoring the Pointers 21-10 in the final 10 minutes.
 
UW-Eau Claire opened the fourth on a 14-2 run to take a 52-49 lead with 2:02 left in the fourth after four consecutive points from Erin O'Toole. From there, the final 15 points of the game were scored at the free-throw line. The Pointers 8-for-10 at the line in the final 41 seconds, while the Blugolds were 7-for-9.
 
Anklam led UW-Stevens Point with 16 points on three three-pointers and 7-for-8 at the charity stripe. Lexi Roland added 12 points on 5-for-9 from the floor and sister Mickey had 10 for the Pointers.
 
Teenis Lichtfuss was the leading scorer for UW-Eau Claire with 16 on 5-for-9 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 at the line. Erin O'Toole recorded 15 points and eight rebounds, while Arien Becker made all five of her shots on her way to 11 points and six boards.
 
UW-Eau Claire shot 43.5 percent from the field, compared to 28.3 percent for UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers shot 85.0 percent (17-for-20) at the line, while the Blugolds shot 70.8 percent (17-for-24).
 
UW-Stevens Point grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and turned them into a 23-10 advantage in second-chance points. Meanwhile, UW-Eau Claire held a 21-11 edge in points off turnovers.
 
The Pointers trailed 30-26 at halftime but scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 33-30 lead. Mickey Roland opened the half with a three-pointer and a jumper to give UW-Stevens Point the lead and Lexi Roland extended the lead to 36-32 later with a three of her own.
 
UW-Stevens Point led by 11 in the final minute of the third before Jennie LaCroix closed the quarter with a layup, leaving the Pointers up by nine after three.
 
The Pointers play a pair of home games next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. game against UW-Platteville on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Berg Gym. UW-Stevens Point is currently tied with UW-Whitewater for third in the WIAC, two games behind both UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls.
