LOS ANGELES — Erin Matsumoto scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Grace Baronowski and Midori McElwee hit key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, and the Occidental women's basketball team earned a big victory over Redlands, 58-49 at Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Matsumoto paced the Tigers throughout the game, going 7 of 14 from the field to help Oxy erase a 13-2 deficit after the first quarter, and iced the game late with five consecutive free throws. She scored nine of her points in the second quarter as the Tigers outscored Redlands 20-10 in the period to cut the lead to 23-22 by halftime.
McElwee saved all nine of her points for the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer with 7 minutes left that sparked an 11-2 run. After she buried a three on a called set for the look, Grace Baranowskifound herself free from beyond the arc twice in the next 4 minutes, knocking down both shots.
From the Coach: "Erin is our leader and she sure played like it tonight," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "I was proud of our effort and poise to not let getting behind early bother us. Midori and Grace made some big plays in the fourth and we were able to pull out a good team win."
Baranowski finished with nine points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Triana Andersonchipped in 10 points off of the bench on an efficient 3 of 4 night from the field.
Courtney Chen kept the Bulldogs close with her court vision, setting up teammates with nine assists. She also scored seven points, had seven rebounds and five steals.
Brinsley Farry led Redlands with 14 points and Reyna Ta'amu had a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers held Redlands to just 29 percent from the field and 17 percent from the 3-point line.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 9-13 overall and 5-8 in SCIAC play.
The Bulldogs fall to 8-12 and 5-6.
