Trine buries Albion with early spurt

ALBION, Mich. – Trine University shot 73 percent in building a 16-point lead in the first quarter and it went on to score a 63-47 victory over Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.

Haley Martin scored eight of her 16 points in the first quarter, including a pair of baskets to complete 9-0 run as Trine surged to a 17-8 lead.

Cassidy Williams and Whitney Shaffer added 3-point baskets and Alivia Recker produced an old-fashioned three-point play as Trine scored nine points in the final minute and a half of the first quarter.

Trine outscored Albion, 15-7, in the second quarter to lead 41-17 at halftime.

Darian Payne made all three of her shots as Albion shot 54 percent in the fourth quarter. Albion outscored Trine, 18-7, in the final quarter.

Oreyana Curry hit 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range to lead Albion with 15 points. Payne finished with eight points and nine rebounds.

Albion (9-13 overall, 5-8 MIAA) will make its final road trip of the season Saturday when it challenges third-ranked Hope College.
