Danbury, Conn. - Senior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) led all players with 26 points and 15 rebounds but that was not enough as the Trinity College women's basketball team lost 87-69 on Tuesday night to the Western Connecticut State Colonials. The loss is the Bantams' first of the year while Western improves to 3-2.
Trinity started the game on a 7-4 run, however Western came back with four straight points to take the lead and would not look back from there. The Bantams found themselves trailing 25-21 at the end of the first quarter but followed with a nine point second quarter to head into halftime trailing 49-30. Griffin recorded her fourth double-double of the year by the half, while senior guard Lexi Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) added six of her own.
After Western scored the first four points of the third quarter to take a 23-point lead, Trinity started to chip away. Midway through the quarter, the lead was trimmed to 62-47, and with just over a minute to play in the quarter, a Griffin layup cut the lead to 66-57.
Western moved to a 70-57 lead with two minutes played in the fourth quarter, but a jumper by freshman Erica Junquet (Monroe, NJ) midway through the period cut the lead to seven points, 73-66. However, Western finished the game on a 14-2 run to win the game by 18.
Western held a 40-37 advantage in rebounds, while the Bantams had an 18-15 edge in assists. Western finished shooting 51.5% from the floor and 60.0% from the line, while Trinity hit 41.8% and 85.7%, respectively
Menard finished with nine points and eight assists to compliment Griffin's 25 while senior guard Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) and senior forward Melanie Mills(Woodstock, Conn.) finished with eight points each. For Western, junior guard Emily Dobson (Westerly, R.I.) finished with a team high 15 points while three other Colonials scored in double digits.
Trinity returns to action on Friday when they will travel to Norwich University for the Ed Hockebury Classic. The Bantams face Maine-Presque Isle on Friday at 8:00 p.m. followed by the winner of Norwich and Bay Path on Saturday at a time to be determined.
