Hartford, Conn. - Senior captain center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) led the Bantams with 21 points and 17 rebounds while junior guard Sheena Landy(Durham, Conn.) added 16 points as the Trinity College women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the St. Joseph Blue Jays, 69-59, on Tuesday night in Hartford. Trinity improves to 10-7 overall while St. Joseph drops to 2-18.
Trinity ended the first quarter up by five over the Blue Jays before an offensive explosion in the second quarter made it 39-24 in favor of the Bantams as the two teams entered the half. Griffin paced the home team with 15 points and 10 boards at the break while Landy tallied eight points of her own. Trinity shot 14-32 from the field (43.8%) despite shooting 1-6 from beyond the arc in the half.
In the second half, St. Joseph came out on an 8-2 run to cut into Trinity's lead. The Blue Jays were led by sophomore forward Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) who finished with a team high 24 points and 10 rebounds on 10-21 shooting. Trinity saw their lead cut to nine with 7:37 remaining in the 4th quarter which prompted coach Wendy Davis to call for a timout. However, despite the Blue Jays run, Trinity's offense was too much for the Blue Jays as the Bantams held on for the 10-point victory.
The Bantams shot 40% from the field while getting to the free throw line 27 times. They out-rebounded the Blue Jays 47-25 as Griffin pulled down a game high 17 boards followed by freshman Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) who had seven rebounds, and Landy who finished with six. Senior captain guard Lexi Menard(Wallingford, Conn.) dished out a season-high 11 assists for Trinity while St. Joseph sophomore Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) tallied 11 points for the Blue Jays.
Trinity returns to action on February 5, when they host New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponent Tufts at home. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
