SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 5, 2016) – Despite 19 points from senior Jamie Chauvin and 10 points from junior Savannah Rose, the Sewanee women's basketball team could not hold off Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Millsaps, Friday, as the Majors earned a 64-58 comeback win inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers are now 11-9 overall and 3-6 in SAA action. The Majors improved to 12-8 overall and are now 6-3 in league play. Millsaps sits a game back from SAA leaders Birmingham-Southern and Hendrix.
After both teams scored 14 points in the opening quarter, Millsaps dominated the next 10 minutes. The Majors limited Sewanee to two field goals, both by freshman Bella Taylor, in the second quarter. With that, Millsaps built a 24-18 lead by halftime.
Despite its poor offensive showing in the second quarter, Sewanee came out of the locker ready to play. The Tigers scored seven of the first 10 points to pull to within two, 27-25, with less than three minutes off the clock. Eventually, Sewanee tied the contest at 32-32 after 7-4 run.
The Tigers took their first lead of the third when senior forward Haley McDonough hit a layup with 2:22 left.
Ahead by two, 39-37, to start the final quarter, freshman Corey Caulder extended the lead when she converted three free throws.
Unfortunately, Millsaps answered back. The Majors made their next five shots to take a 49-47 lead with 4:37 to play.
Even after Taylor tied the contest with two more free throws, the Majors went on another scoring run. A Beverly Holmes three sparked a 7-2 run by the black and purple.
From there, Millsaps closed the game with key free throws from Katie Connor.
Overall, Sewanee struggled from the field making 34.5 percent of its shots. Sewanee did manage to limit its turnovers to just six and outscore the Majors inside the paint, 20-14.
Guard Marissa Taylor led Millsaps off the bench with a team-high 13 points. Overall, the Majors had six players with at least eight points.
Sewanee returns to action Sunday against rival Birmingham-Southern. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
