ALFRED, NY—Sophomore McKaylee Croll (Perry, NY/Perry) buried a three-point shot with three seconds left to push the Saxons over the Hartwick Hawks 48-45 in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena in Alfred, NY Friday evening.
With 1:58 left in the game the Saxons jumped ahead of the Hawks with two made free throws from junior Amanda Off (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley). AU held Hartwick scoreless in the next position but turned the ball back to the Hawks with time running out. Hartwick's Caitlin Corbett hit a jumper with 28 seconds left to knot the game up 45-45.
Next, the first year coach Monique McLean called a time out to put together a game plan for the closing seconds. The Saxons let the clock run down to five and Croll pegged the shot off the backboard and into the net to earn the lead and eventually the win for the Saxons. The win is coach McLean's first win as a Saxon in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
During the game, no AU players scored in double-digits, making a team effort key for the win. Eight separate players scored for the Saxons in the game. Off, Croll, and junior Maddi Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) paced AU with nine points each. Flint also led the Saxons with four assists.
Sophomore Taylor Kelley (Andover, NY/Andover) had 11 rebounds and eight blocks on the night. The eight blocks ties Kelley's career-high.
Hartwick was paced by Taylor Vonasek with 18 points. Christina Graziadei had nine rebounds and four blocks for the Hawks.
AU (2-18, E8 1-10) has a quick turnaround as they take on Empire 8 foe Stevens Tech at home Saturday afternoon at 4PM.
