HARTFORD - Senior Michelle Wu scored 12 points in 22 minutes off the bench as the eighth-ranked Tufts Women's Basketball team earned a 61-38 decision at Trinity College in NESCAC play Friday night.
With the win, head coach Carla Berube's Jumbos improve to 19-2 overall and 8-0 in NESCAC. They face a showdown at undefeated and second-ranked Amherst (21-0, 7-0 NESCAC) tomorrow at 3 pm.
Trinity, led by 13 points from Mackenzie Griffin tonight, fell to 10-8 overall and 0-7 in conference action.
The host Bantams stayed close with the Jumbos in the first half as they trailed the visitors by just three 25-22 after 20 minutes of play.
Tufts, however, came out of break determined as they shot 53.3% from the field on 8-15 shooting in the third quarter to open a 21-point, 46-25 lead entering the final quarter. Tufts outscored the Bantams 21-3 in the third quarter with the only Trinity points coming on a jump shot by Griffin and a free throw by senior captain guard Lexi Menard. SophomoreLauren Dillon and Melissa Baptista both had seven points in the third quarter for Tufts.
The Jumbos finished the game shooting 42.9% (21/49) from the field while they limited the Bantams to 15-47 shooting (31.9 percent) on the evening. Turnovers plagued Trinity as they committed 21 give-aways compared to just 12 from Tufts.
Griffin added six rebounds for Trinity, while Menard and freshman Erin Cunningham finished with six points each.
Baptista finished with 12 points to go along with five steals. Junior Michela North tallied 10 points and nine boards.
Trinity returns to action tomorrow when they play host to the Bates Bobcats. Tip-off is set for 3 pm.
