No. 14 women's basketball rallies late, tops Blue Devils in overtime

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The No. 14 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team overcame a six-point deficit with 1:33 remaining in regulation to outscore UW-Stout 13-5 in overtime to claim a 69-61 win on Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.

UW-Stevens Point (15-3, 5-1 WIAC) trailed UW-Stout (8-10, 2-5 WIAC) 56-50 with 1:33 left in the fourth quarter but cut the deficit to two on back-to-back layups by Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) andLauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest), following a steal, to cut it to 56-54 with 56 seconds to go. The Pointers then got a stop and Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) made a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to send it to overtime after the Blue Devils missed at the buzzer.

An Anklam jumper and two free throws by Roland accounted for the first four points of overtime but UW-Stout stayed in touch to trail 62-59 with 1:28 to play. Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) made a layup with 1:00 remaining to make it a two-possession game and Anklam made five free throws in the final 50 seconds to see out the team's 12th win in 13 games.

Miceli paced UW-Stevens Point with a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end. The senior was 8-for-15 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the game. Anklam added 19 points, eight in overtime, on 5-for-13 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Roland added seven points and a career-high 13 points for UW-Stevens Point, which shot 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the field and overcame 24 turnovers. The Pointers outrebounded the Blue Devils 54-37 behind 23 offensive rebounds.

UW-Stout had three players in double figures, led by Jenna Goldsmith's 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Bailey Diersen added 12 points off the bench and Kyncaide Diedrich pitched in 10 points and six boards for the Blue Devils, who shot 34.4 percent (21-for-61) and shot 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) from behind the arc.

The Blue Devils held the Pointers scoreless for the first 5:04 of the game but led just 6-0. UW-Stevens Point responded with seven straight points to take the lead and led 13-9 after a quarter. Neither team led by more than three in the second quarter as UW-Stout took a 26-23 lead into the break.

UW-Stout took a nine-point lead midway through the third quarter but UW-Stevens Point closed the period on a 10-2 run and took a 39-38 lead into the fourth on a Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) three at the buzzer. In the fourth, the Blue Devils used a 8-1 run to open up a 55-48 lead with 2:38 remaining prior to the Pointers' late rally.

UW-Stevens Point hosts No. 11 UW-Oshkosh in a top-15 matchup on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. at Berg Gym for the team's "Pack It Purple" game.
