Stingy Defense Helps Lancaster Bible Defeat Keuka

More news about: Lancaster Bible

A new wrinkle in the Lancaster Bible women's basketball defense is paying dividends this week as the Chargers once again used a press to change the tide of a game and eventually defeated Keuka, 62-48 on Thursday night at Horst Athletic Center. The victory, thanks to a 20-0 run midway through the first half, improves the Chargers to 9-3 this season and 6-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

How it Happened: The cold air from the outside made its way to the Chargers' bench in the early parts of the first quarter as Lancaster Bible trailed 14-5 with 3:39 to play in the opening 10 minutes. Keuka's ball movement resulted in a few open shots and back-to-back 3-pointers from Mackenzie Cole and Lauren Anten build the Wolfpack's lead to nine.

Following a 30-second timeout, the Chargers turned up the pressure and scored the final 13 points of the first quarter and grabbed an 18-14 lead after one. Layups from Aubrey FolgerKrissy Pennell and Kirsten Webster and a 3-pointer from Katy Stover highlighted the scoring run as Lancaster Bible forced four turnovers in the final three minutes of the quarter.

Lancaster Bible didn't stop there as the defense forced five more turnovers in the first five minutes of the second half and the Chargers built an 11-point lead at 25-14 with 5:39 to play in the half. Keuka ended its scoring drought with 4:45 to play in the second quarter as Anten hit a jumper to cut the Wolfpack's deficit to nine. During the 8:54 scoring drought, Lancaster Bible outscored Keuka, 20-0 and forced nine turnovers.

The Chargers ended up allowing just four points in the second quarter and took a 32-18 advantage into halftime. During the final 13:39 of the first half, Lancaster Bible outscored Keuka, 27-4.

The Wolfpack found their rhythm early in the third quarter and cut Lancaster Bible's lead to 10 with 6:00 remaining in the third quarter, but the Chargers continued to convert their chances and even used a bit of good fortune to open up a 16-point lead with 1:02 to play in the third. Webster received the ball on the left-wing of the court and got her defender to leave her feet and as Webster was being fouled, she shot the ball towards the basket and it went in for a 3-pointer and she then completed the four-point play with the adjoining free throw.

Keuka didn't quit the entire game, but the Chargers ability to move the ball proved to be too much and Lancaster Bible rolled to its second straight victory.

On the team's scoring run midway through the first half..."To be down 14-5 and then play well the rest of the half and turn it around was big for us," Vanderhoff said. "You can't let a team like Keuka hang around, because that's when they start to build momentum."
