Trinity Women's Basketball Loses At Wesleyan

Middletown, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams suffered a 70-46 setback against the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon in Silloway Gym.  Trinity drops to 9-4 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC with its third consecutive loss, while the Cardinals improve to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.  Three players scored in double figures for the Wesleyan University women's basketball team as it cruised to a commanding 70-46 win over NESCAC rival Trinity College Saturday afternoon in Silloway Gymnasium.

Trinity scored the first basket of the game off a layup by junior Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.), but the Cardinals responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead. Minutes later, a jumper by Tara Berger gave Wesleyan a 13-8 advantage with 3:33 to play in the first quarter. Trinity retaliated with four unanswered points to cut the deficit to one, but Wesleyan put together a 5-0 run down the stretch to claim an 18-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.  In the second quarter, a jumper by Olivia Gorman capped off a 12-0 Wesleyan run, and the Cardinals led, 25-12, at the four-minute mark.  Trinity first-year forward Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) scored five points on a two-point jumper and a three-pointer in the closing minutes of the first half, but Wesleyan held a 34-17 advantage at the break

Wesleyan increased its lead to as many as 19 points early in the third frame, but a Trinity three-pointer by rookie guard Erica Junquet(Monroe, N.J.) with 17 seconds to play in the third quarter cut the deficit to 10 at 50-40 with 17 seconds left before the final break.  The Cardinal put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, outscoring Trinity, 18-6, to account for the 70-46 final tally.

The Bantams were led by Landy and Cunningham with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Senior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) grabbed nine rebounds and registered five steals, and classmate Alexa Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded a team-high four assists.  Wesleyan was led by Brenna Diggins who dropped a game-high 18 points, while Gorman registered 13 points in just 14 minutes.  Chynna Bailey9 led the Cardinals with nine boards and Danielle Gervacio dished out a game-high nine assists. As a team, Wesleyan shot 48.3% (28-58) from the floor and 83.3% (10-12) from the charity stripe.
