The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team won its fourth straight game on Friday night as the Chargers defeated Cazenovia, 81-52 in Cazenovia, N.Y. The victory sends the Chargers to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Four plays scored in double figures and three players recorded double-doubles in the 29-point victory.
How it Happened: Cazenovia opened the game on an 11-6 run over the first 4:40 of the contest, but the Chargers slowly chipped away at the deficit and took a 14-13 lead with 43 seconds left in the quarter on a 3-pointer from Katy Stover. The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter and with 6:52 remaining and the score tied at 18-18, the Chargers used an 8-0 run over the next 2:06 to take a 26-18 advantage.
Lancaster Bible would never trail again and eventually took a 36-26 lead into halftime. The Chargers maintained their double-digit advantage throughout the third quarter and used a 9-0 run over the last 3:40 of the quarter to take a 61-40 lead at the end of three quarters. Stover and Aubrey Folger combined for all nine of the points during the scoring run as the Chargers outscored the Wildcats, 25-14 in the third quarter.
Mary Finkbeiner's layup with 3:25 remaining gave the Chargers their biggest lead of the game at 77-49 and Lancaster Bible would win by the same margin, 81-52.
By the Numbers: Folger finished with a game-high 21 points and added 16 rebounds, while Stover had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists...Junior Krissy Pennell had a career-high 19 points and set a new program-record with 13 assists...Senior Shanice Smith added 12 points and 13 boards..Junior Marisa Jo Abtschipped in with six points and four rebounds...Lancaster Bible held a 50-33 advantage on the boards, including a 22-10 edge on the offensive glass...The Chargers shot 31-of-76 (40.8 percent) from the floor and were 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Coach Says: "I thought we had a pretty good overall performance tonight," Lancaster Bible Head CoachKatelyn Vanderhoff said. "Cazenovia came out very aggressive and physical and it took us a little while to adjust."
On Stover's play..."Katy played great tonight," Vanderhoff said. "She did a great job shutting down their leading scorer defensively and shot the ball well."
On Pennell's night..."Krissy also had a great night and is playing at a high level right now," Vanderhoff said.
Extra! Extra!: Pennell's 13 assists break the previous program record of 12 set by Sharon Roper (1983-87)...Friday was Pennell's third game with 10+ assists this season, including her second straight...Lancaster Bible's 50 rebounds were the second-most in a game this season, trailing just the 54 the team pulled down against Penn St. Berks on Dec. 2...Lancaster Bible's seven 3-pointers tie a season-high which the Chargers also accomplished against Penn College on Jan. 7.
