Senior guard Michelle Ricolcol scored a season-high 26 points to help lead the Forester women's basketball team to an 83-77 come-from-behind victory over Knox College at home on Saturday.
Ricolcol scored a dozen of her points during the third quarter as Lake Forest erased a 12-point halftime deficit. The Foresters actually led briefly late in the period after a basket by junior forward Brittany Avonts but trailed 66-62 when it ended.
A layup by Lake Forest junior forward Brie Majkowski tied the game at 68 early in the fourth quarter and a free throw by senior forward K.C. Stralka with 7:28 to play put the home team ahead for good. The Forester defense clamped down late in the contest, holding Knox to just 3-of-23 shooting from the field in the final period. The Prairie Fire missed all 10 of their attempts from three-point range during that time. The Lake Forest lead was still just a point after a Knox basket with 1:39 left but a traditional three-point play by Stralka on the next possession gave the Foresters some breathing room. The margin later grew to seven points after a basket by sophomore guard Kelsey Schmitt with 39.7 second on the clock and the visitors were unable to mount a late comeback.
Lake Forest had a commanding 59-47 edge in rebounds in the game and three Foresters grabbed at least 10 boards. Stralka finished with 16 points and a dozen rebounds for her fifth career double-double and Schmitt had 15 points and a career-high-tying 10 boards for her first. Junior guard Tara Gloystein scored a career-high eight points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and added four steals. In addition to her 26 points, Ricolcol also had five rebounds and a team-high five assists.
The Foresters shot a season-high 46.2 percent from the floor while Knox connected on just 29.7 percent of field goal attempts, including just 11 of 56 shots from beyond the arc. There were 71 turnovers in the contest, including 39 by the home team.
The victory improves Lake Forest's overall record to 3-2 and Midwest Conference mark to 2-1. It was the first loss of the season for the Prairie Fire, who are now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The Foresters will play their final conference game of the fall semester Tuesday night at St. Norbert College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
