Rowan Women's Basketball Goes To 7-0 In The NJAC After Holding Off Kean, 103-97

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team held off Kean University, 103-97 on Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game.

 

Rowan scored more than 100 points for the first time since a 105-65 win over Penn State Brandywine on January 5, 2009. The Profs have an overall record of 13-1. They are 7-0 in the conference, their best NJAC start since beginning the 1997-98 campaign (8-0). The Cougars are 9-5 overall and they have a 4-3 conference mark.

 

Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) tallied her sixth straight double-double and the ninth of the season with 17 points and 15 rebounds. She also had four assists. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored 21 points and guard/forward Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added a career-high 15 points off the bench.

 

For Kean, guard Marajiah Bacon (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) poured in a game-high 30 points. Guards Jaquetta Owens (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) and Tori Schweyher (fr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) each scored 23 points. Owens also handed out eight assists. Guard Miesha Bacon (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.

 

Kean jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 7:49 to play in the first quarter. Marajiah Bacon tallied four points. The Cougars led 10-3 (6:41) then the Profs scored eight consecutive to go out in front 11-10. Sanchez recorded four points. The game was tied at 13 at the 4:34 mark. Marajiah Bacon (4:21) and Owens (3:54) had back-to-back baskets for a 17-13 Kean advantage. The Cougars extended their lead to five points (24-19) on a triple by Schweyher (1:07) and then six (27-21) on another three-pointer by Schweyher (0:20). Guard Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) drilled a three with seven-seconds remaining and the Profs trailed 27-24 after one.

 

Kean held a 30-28 lead at the 9:03 mark of the second then Rowan scored 11 straight points to go ahead 39-30 with 6:59 on the clock. Five different Profs recorded points during the run. Rowan maintained the cushion and extended it to 12 points (53-41) after a pair of free throws by Schullstrom (0:14). The Profs went into the break holding a 53-43 lead.

 

Rowan was in front 57-45 with 8:41 left in the third. Kean then used a 12-2 run that included six points by Owens to get to within two (59-57) with 5:18 on the clock. A Schweyher jumper (2:58) made the score 67-66. The Profs scored 12 of the next 15 points to go up by 10 (79-69) at the 42-second mark. Marajiah Bacon (0:19) and Owens (0:00) ended the quarter with consecutive baskets and Rowan was ahead 79-73 heading into the fourth.

 

The Profs started the final quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 91-77 lead with 7:20 remaining. Rowan held a 93-79 advantage after two free throws by Sanchez (6:59). The Cougars then went on a 10-1 run, trimming the deficit to five (94-89) at the 4:45 mark. Marajiah Bacon's layup (1:46) made the score 98-95, but on Rowan's ensuing possession, guard Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) nailed a three-pointer (0:58), giving the Profs a 101-95 lead that the Cougars could not overcome.

 

Rowan travels to William Paterson University on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
