BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team overcame an early deficit against American Southwest Conference opponent LeTourneau University, but trailed late falling 56-54 to the YellowJackets. The win improved LeTourneau to 8-6 on the season and 4-2 in ASC play while the Cru moved to 4-7 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.
LeTourneau jumped to an early 9-3 lead and held an advantage through the first two quarters. UMHB held the YellowJackets scoreless through eight minutes of play, taking its first lead of the game with a 25-23 lead and extended that to 39-34 to end the third quarter. LeTourneau responded, tying the contest at 49-49 in the fourth and outscoring the Cru 7-5 in the final three and a half minutes of play.
Bridjai Chaney led the Cru with 14 points, followed by Destini Oakmon with a new career-high 13 points. Jonelle Smith added nine while three other Crusaders each added six. UMHB totaled 40 rebounds, bringing down nine offensive rebounds and 31 defensive boards, led by Chaney with nine. Oakmon recorded a team-high five assists while Chaney led the Cru with two blocks and Smith had a team-high two steals.
LeTourneau's Crystal Jones led the YellowJackets with 20 points followed by LaTanya Drakes with 11. UMHB shot 31.6 percent in the contest and 75 percent from the free throw line while the YellowJackets shot 32.2 percent in the game and 68.4 percent from the line.
UMHB returns to action Saturday, January 9th in a 1 p.m. game against the University of Texas at Tyler at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
