Nor'easters breeze Curry in CCC play, 81-40

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Brooke Flaherty (JR/Portland, Maine) scored a career-high 15 points to lead five players in double figures, as the University of New England women's basketball team led start-to-finish in an 81-40 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Curry College Thursday evening (Jan. 7) at the Harold Alfond Forum.


The Nor'easters remain unbeaten in conference play with a mark of 4-0 while improving their overall record to 7-3. Curry is 4-7 in all games and 2-3 in CCC action. The game was a rematch of last season's CCC Championship title game, which UNE won by a score of 81-72. The Nor'easters have now won 45 consecutive CCC regular-season home contests and are a perfect 29-0 in regular-season conference games at the Harold Alfond Forum since the facility opened in 2012.

Flaherty came off the bench to convert 6 of 12 field goal attempts and grab a game-high nine rebounds. Alicia Brown (JR/Greenland, N.H.) contributed 13 points and three steals, while Olivia Shaw (SO/Saco, Maine) had 11 points, eight steals and a pair of blocked shots. Lauren Hayden (SR/Chantilly, Va.) filled out the stat sheet with 11 points, seven steals and five rebounds, and Alanna Vose (SR/Cushing, Maine) scored 10 points to round out UNE's double-digit scorers. Meghan Gribbin (SR/Windham, Maine) dished out a game-high assists for the Nor'easters, who totaled 22 assists on 31 field goals.

Junior Alyssa Keeney (JR/Coventry, Conn.) tallied 10 points to lead all Curry scorers. Emily Irwin (FR/Billerica, Mass.) contributed seven points, five assists and five steals.

The Nor'easters jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 1:01 into the contest and was never threatened. UNE led 26-12 after one quarter of play, forcing 17 Colonel turnovers in the opening 10 minutes. UNE went on to lead 41-23 at intermission.

UNE's 18-point halftime cushion swelled to 38 (64-26) after three quarters, as the Nor'easters outscored Curry 23-3 in the third.

For the game the Nor'easters' defense limited the Colonels to 27.7 percent (13 of 47) accuracy from the floor while harassing Curry into 39 miscues. UNE, which received 36 points from its bench, also built a 47-40 advantage on the backboard.

Both teams play 1 p.m. CCC road contests Saturday. UNE heads to Salve Regina University, while Curry faces Gordon College.
