Chaney Forbush Breaks 1,000 Point Mark – Hornets Outlast W&L 65-62 in OT

LYNCHBURG, VA – Lynchburg College senior forward Chaney Forbush broke the career 1,000-point barrier Wednesday evening and the Hornets outlasted visiting Washington & Lee University 65-62 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action.

Lynchburg led 33-30 at halftime and 42-41 after the third period in a game in which no team had an advantage of more than six points. The Hornets led 57-54 with 30 seconds left in regulation after a layup by Forbush, her fourth-straight basket for LC. W&L's Jackie Clifford hit two free throws with 20 ticks remaining, and Lynchburg converted on one of two free throws with 14 seconds left to go ahead by two. Clifford drilled a 15-foot jumper off the dribble with six seconds remaining to force OT.

Senior guard Sammi Goldsmith's only basket of the night might have been the game's biggest with 43 seconds left in overtime to give LC a 65-62 lead. W&L couldn't convert three chances on its' end and was forced to foul with 16 seconds left. The Generals received new life after a pair of Hornet misses but the LC defense held tough to grind out the victory.

Forbush reached 1,000 points at 2:25 mark of the first period, hitting a layup from the left side on a feed from junior guard Charmaine Hairston. She finished with game-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds to go with two blocked shots, and made 11-of-18 from the field. Sophomore forward Caroline Naumann posted 11 points and nine rebounds while Sarah Coronel contributed nine points and five caroms. Hairston finished the night with nine points and three steals and Goldsmith handed out seven assists. Sarah Coon made the most of her 18 minutes with a pair of clutch baskets, four rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Shelbi Hendricks tallied 16 points and nine rebounds for Washington & Lee (6-6/1-2 ODAC). Emma Redding had 14 points and five boards while Jackie Clifford added 11 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Forbush becomes the program's eighth member of the 1,000 point club and is just six points away from sixth place in school history. She also is listed prominently in four other top 10 all-time categories; rebounds, blocked shots, field goals made and free throws made.

The Hornets (10-2/3-0 ODAC) travel to Randolph-Macon College for another ODAC game Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
