SALISBURY, MD – The nationally ranked York College women's basketball team ended Salisbury's 23-game home win streak with an 80-74 overtime Capital Athletic Conference win in the Maggs Center on Wednesday evening.
The Spartans, who broke into the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll at #25 on Tuesday, improve to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the CAC. The Sea Gulls are now 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the league. Salisbury went 15-0 last year at the Maggs Center and were already 4-0 at home this year. It also ended a 12-game conference home win streak for the Gulls.
The last quarter was action-packed as the teams went back and forth, symbolic of the entire game. The fourth quarter alone saw seven lead changes and two ties. With the Sea Gulls up one in the last minute of the game, freshman Beth Wiseley (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) hit a three pointer with 26 seconds left to give York a 62-60 lead. The Sea Gulls tied the game when Lauren Rothfeld was fouled with 13 seconds left. Rothfeld canned both free throws, tying the game for the eighth time. The Sea Gulls then elected to foul three times as they had just one foul in the quarter. That cut the time down to seven seconds remaining in regulation. Sophomore Morgan Kuehne (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) then appeared the hit the game winner as she canned a jumper with three seconds left, giving York a 64-62 lead. After a Salisbury timeout, Julia McLaughlin took advantage of a Spartan defensive breakdown to hit a jumper at the horn, forcing overtime.
In the extra session, the jumped on top with a Kuehne three-point play 1:15 into the extra session. After a Rothfeld jumper cut the Salisbury deficit to one, Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) hit the Spartans' last field goal of the game as she converted a three-point play to push the York lead to 70-66 with 2:58 left in overtime.
York then made 10-of-12 free throws over the final 1:06 of the game to earn the six-point win. It was their first win at Salisbury since February 2, 2013 when they posted a 72-50 victory.
The first quarter of the game saw the Spartans sprint out to a 4-0 lead but that would be their largest advantage of the quarter as the Gulls came back to tie the game three times before the Green and White took a 13-11 lead to quarter number two.
The Sea Gulls took their first lead of the game when Josephine Noonan hit a lay up with 7:45 left in the half. After Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) hit a three, the Sea Gulls went on a 13-4 run to forge a 31-24 lead with 1:22 left in the stanza. Kuehne converted a three-point play to draw York to within four at 31-27 but Mary McDonagh hit a jumper with 21 seconds left, giving the Gulls a 33-27 halftime lead.
The Spartans came out of the break with an 11-4 spurt as the Green and White took a 38-37 lead with 6:08 remaining in the third. The run was fueled by Kuehne and Hruz. Kuehne tallied seven points while Hruz added another four points during the spurt.
The Gulls scored seven of the next nine points of the game to push out to a 44-40 lead but York would tie the game at 46 with 2:30 left in the quarter. The Gulls would take a 48-47 lead on a Morgan Grubb jumper with five seconds left in the stanza.
York would push out to a four-point lead midway through the fourth quarter but the Gulls would battle back to take a 60-59 lead before Wiseley hit the huge three, setting the stage for the dramatic final minute of regulation.
Kuehne finished the game with a career-high 29 points as the sophomore was outstanding for the Spartans. Kuehne was 11-for-18 from the floor including 1-for-1 from three and 6-for-8 from the line. She also had three rebounds in her 39 minutes of work. Hruz added 15 points, eight rebounds, four blocked shots and a steal in her 39 minutes of action. Hruz was 6-for-12 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three, and 2-for-3 from the stripe. Junior Karli McFatridge (York, Pa./York Catholic) was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points as she was 4-for-7 from the floor including 2-of-3 from distance. McFatridge also went 2-for-2 from the line in the victory. Freshman Katie McGowan(York, Pa./Dallastown) tossed in a career-high seven points with three rebounds and two steals in a career-high 16 minutes.
Junior guard Brianna Bisci (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) dished out a season-high eight assists while she also had three rebounds and a pair of points in 43 minutes. Wagner added nine points, four assists and three rebounds for York.
McLaughlin powered the Sea Gulls with 22 points and 12 points in her 39 minutes of work. McLaughlin was 10-for-24 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the stripe. McDonagh added 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot in her 41 minutes of action. McDonagh was 7-for-19 from the floor including 2-for-12 from three. Rothfeld was the Sea Gull in double figures with 13 points while she also had nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
York finished the game shooting 43.1% from the floor including a very efficient 5-for-10 from three. The Spartans converted 19-of-26 (73.1%) from three including 12-for-14 in the overtime period. Salisbury made 37.8% of their field goal attempts in the game while they were just 3-for-18 (16.7%) from distance. Salisbury made all nine of their free throw attempts in the game.
The Sea Gulls dominated on the glass as they held a 51-40 margin in rebounding including 25 offensive rebounds. That led to Salisbury taking 17 more shots in the game. Despite the Salisbury advantage on the glass, York held a 20-14 edge in second chance points.
The Spartans forced 20 Salisbury turnovers which led to York holding a 24-12 advantage in points off turnovers. York committed just 16 turnovers, their second lowest total of the season.
York returns home on Saturday to host the other conference unbeaten, Marymount University. Tip time from Wolf Gymnasium is set for 1:00 pm.
