More news about: Trine

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- No. 19 Calvin put a halt to Trine's six game winning-streak as the Knights handed the Thunder an 81-52 defeat in MIAA-action Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.

The Knights shot 52 percent from the field (35-of-67). Calvin's pressure defense, which came into the game forcing 26 turnovers per game, forced Trine into 25 miscues. The Knights were able to convert those turnovers into 31 points. Bre Luurtsema placed four Calvin players in double-figures, scoring 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting. Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting to pace the Thunder. Trine fell to 9-4 overall, 2-3 in the MIAA. The Knights improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) added 14 points on a 5-of-8 effort from the floor for the Thunder. Montana Martin (Columbia City, Ind./Churubusco) tied a career-high with seven points off the bench. Taylor Cole (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd) added seven points, four assists and four steals. Cole topped the 100-career steal milestone and now has 103 in her career.

Anna Timmer added 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting for Calvin. Timmer entered the game 10th in the nation in field goal percentage. Kally Verkaik notched a double-double, scoring 10 points and adding 11 rebounds. She also dished out eight assists. The Knights outscored Trine 50-20 in the paint.

Calvin scored the first seven points of the game and led by a 21-7 margin at the end of the first quarter. The Thunder was able to mount a run to close the deficit to single digits in the second quarter. Dawson sparked Trine in the quarter with eight points, knocking down 3-of-6 from the field.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Dawson cut the score to 29-20 with 3:48 to play in the half, but a 7-2 close to the second quarter gave the Knights a 35-22 lead at the break.

A 7-2 Thunder run to start the second half looked to be giving Trine a spark. A three by Dawson and back-to-back driving layups by Cole cut the score to 40-29, but that was as close as the Thunder would get the rest of the night. A 14-0 Knight run over the next 3:49 put the game out of reach.

Trine returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 9 when the Thunder host Albion at 1 p.m. on the home floor of Hershey Hall.
