(GREENVILLE, Pa.) – The No. 1-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team crossed the century mark for the first time this season today (Saturday, January 2, 2016) as it defeated Thiel College, 102-38, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the PAC as they extend their winning streak to 43 games. With the loss, the Tomcats fall to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in the PAC.
Thomas More took an early 5-0 lead when sophomore forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) made a jumper with 8:04 to play in the first quarter. Thiel answered with a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 6-4 with 6:55 to play in the opening quarter when Hannah Stoneman made a lay-up. The Saints closed out the quarter on an 13-2 run to lead 19-6 after one quarter. Thomas More out-scored Thiel 32-8 in the second quarter to build a 51-14 halftime lead.
The Saints out-scored Thiel 31-10 in the third quarter to lead 82-24 and then out-scored the Tomcats 20-14 to cruise to the 102-38 victory.
For the game, the Saints out-scored Thiel 32-10 in the paint and 37-2 off turnovers. 17 of the 18 Saints that played in the game scored at least one point in the game.
Thomas More was led in scoring by senior forward Samantha Cady (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) with a career-high 17 points. Joining her in double-figure scoring was Kiernan with 16 points and sophomore guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) with 11 points. Kiernan recorded her third double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go with the 16 points, while she led the team in blocked shots with two. Senior guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) led the team in assists as she dished out six and freshman guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) led the team in steals with three.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (January 6) when it travels to Bethany, West Virginia to play Bethany College. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. inside Hummel Field House.
