Alfred University wins first game, 71-66

HUNTINGTON, PA—Juniors Amanda Off (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) and Maddi Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia) ripped down 15 and 11 rebounds, respectively, en route to matching her career-high marks and helping the Saxons to their first win of the 2015-2016 season over Penn State-Altoona, 71-66.
 
In addition to matching her career mark in rebounds (previous 15 rebound game against Mount Saint Mary 12/06/14), Off nearly matched her career best in points, scoring 26 points.  Her personal record was set back on 12/1/15 against Fredonia State where she netted 28 points.  Flint's previous career-best in rebounds was set back on 1/23/15 against Ithaca College where she scrambled for nine rebounds.  Thursday afternoon Flint added seven points to the Alfred University offense.
 
Sophomore McKaylee Croll (Perry, NY/Perry) added another solid performance to the game for AU scoring 20 points and dished the ball for three assists.  Senior Sarah Kichman (Portville, NY/Portville) scored 12 points in the game for AU. 
 
In the opening half of the game, the Saxons generated a lead on the back of 43.3% (19-of-41) shooting.  Off scored 18 points and rebounded 10 balls to complete the double-double in the first half.  AU was on top at the intermission 41-36, without taking a single free throw in the half.  The Lions only committed two fouls in the first half.
 
In the second stanza the Saxons' shooting slowed a bit to 24.2% (8-of-33), but they were able to capitalize from the charity stripe with 66.6% (10-of-15) shooting.  AU's defense also held PSU-Altoona to 30.0% (12-of-40) shooting in the second half and only 10.0% (1-of-10) from behind the arc. 
 
Sophomore Taylor Kelley (Andover, NY/Andover) led the Saxons with five rebounds and three steals while scoring two points over 18 minutes of play.
 
Off was named to the Juniata Holiday All-Tournament team where she posted 44 total points and 20 total rebounds.  Off and the Saxons closed 2015 with a win, and plan to carry that success into 2016 when they take on Utica College at home January 5 at 8PM.
