Lebanon Valley Tops No. 9 Montclair St. in Puerto Rico, 59-50

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Lebanon Valley used a five-point advantage after one quarter and carried that lead throughout the final three periods as the Dutchwomen knocked off No. 9 Montclair State 59-50 in the Puerto Rico Clasico on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Katie Sire and junior Zoe Curtis each had 12 points for MSU which had its four-game winning streak snapped. Montclair State fell to 8-2 on the season following their first meeting with Lebanon Valley since the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Sage Bennett gave the Red Hawks a 5-4 lead with 4:46 to play in the first period before LVC scored eight of the final 10 points to take a 12-7 lead. Trailing by seven early in the second, Montclair closed the gap to 22-18 on a Curtis jumper with 2:20 remaining however a Peyton Carper (24 points) layup with 40 ticks to play gave the Dutchwomen a 24-21 advantage at halftime.

Six straight points to open the second half boosted the Lebanon Valley lead to 30-21 and the lead grew to 40-28 at the end of three quarters. MSU outscored LVC 22-19 in the fourth but could only get as close as six points.

Sire and Curtis finished with six and five rebounds respectively for MSU, which shot just 33 percent (16-of-48) from the field. Rachael Krauss added 10 points for Montclair State.
