(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) – Senior guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) recorded her first double-double of the season today (Saturday, December 19, 2015) as she led the top-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team to an 85-69 win over 11th-ranked Calvin College in a non-conference game at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated at 8-0 and with the loss, the Knights fall to 7-2.
Thomas More led by as many as eight points in the first quarter and led 20-13 at the end of the quarter. Calvin opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 22-19 when MacKenzie Shelton made a jumper with 7:48 to play in the quarter. The Saints closed out the second quarter on a 19-10 run to take a 41-29 at halftime when junior forward Kirsten Paul (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Christian) made a lay-up with 18-seconds to play in the quarter.
The Saints opened the third quarter on an 18-4 run to extend the lead to 59-33 with 4:50 to play in the third quarter when sophomore forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) made a jumper. Calvin closed out the quarter on a 10-5 run to cut the lead to 64-43 after three quarters. The Knights out-scored Thomas More 26-21 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Saints won the match-up of nationally ranked teams, 85-69.
Moss scored a game-high 31 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds to record her double-double and just missed a triple-double as she had a game-high seven assists. Joining her in double-figure scoring was sophomore guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) with 18 points, and Kiernan and Paul with 12 points each. Kiernan led the team in blocks with three, while senior guard Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) led the team in steals with four.
Thomas More is idle until December 30 when it travels to Bloomington, Illinois to play Illinois Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Eastern/2 p.m. Central.
