Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team dropped a 99-86 decision to visiting Cazenovia College on Saturday evening on the opening day of the Kevin Fee/Roos Classic.
The Roos (0-2) led 7-3 early on after Caseylynn Fulton (Saint Cloud, MN) scored a bucket in transition off a pass from Taylor Saltus(Clintonville, NY). The Wildcats (1-1) used a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to open up a six point lead. Cazenovia led 17-11 after the first quarter.
The Wildcats (1-1) outscored the Roos 30-22 in the second quarter to take a 47-33 advantage into intermission. Fulton and Tatiana Laroche(Elmont, NY) led the Roos with 10 points each in the opening 20 minutes.
Cazenovia extended its lead to 21 early in the fourth quarter but the Roos responded with a 7-0 spurt that included four points from Saltus to get within 81-67 with 7:56 remaining. SUNY Canton would trim the lead to 10 points late but the Wildcats held on for the 99-86 victory.
Laroche had a big outing for the Roos with 24 points and eight rebounds on 10-for-14 shooting, while Fulton added her second straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Saltus posted 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, NY) added 16 points. Brianna Sayer (Hermon, NY) also recorded double digit points with 10.
The Roos held edges in fast break points (20-10) and points in the paint (56-30) but shot just 40 percent from the field. Cazenovia hit on 44 percent of their shots and were on fire from downtown going 9-for-15 from beyond the arc.
Skylar Girard paced the Wildcats with 24 points including a 5-for-6 mark from distance, while Taylor Spranger added 23 points. Kelli Shepardson tallied a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds and D'Andrea Watson (18) and Autumn Gavin (14) also scored in double figures for Cazenovia.
