Mariners Overpower Pilgrims

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball picked up a thrilling 54-49 victory over North Atlantic Conference rival New England College on Friday night, inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The Mariners jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, highlighted by four points from Tess Clark (Spring, Texas). The Pilgrims tied things up and took a seven-point lead with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Mariners clawed their way back to take a one-point lead following a three-point-play fromKristi Willey (Topsham, Maine). The two teams exchanged baskets, before Willey's jumper put the Mariners up 24-22 heading into the intermission.

Clark led all players in the first two quarters with eight points, while Willey added seven points and NEC's Utshana Durham and Breana Ramirez each contributed six points.

The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the third quarter, but the Mariners took a narrow 39-37 lead into the final quarter following a Clark jump shot.

Three-straight jump shots from Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) gave the Mariners their biggest lead of the game with 5:45 remaining (47-39), but the Pilgrims hit two timely threes to make it 50-49 with 13 seconds left. The Mariners were sharp from the line, as Clark and Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) each hit a pair of free throws to clinch the 54-49 victory.

Clark led all players with 18 points, while adding nine rebounds and three assists, Felix added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while dishing out a helper and recording a steal. Willey ended the evening with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and a block.

Ramirez led the Pilgrims with 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two assists, Durham contributed 10 points, while Tiffany Davis added a game-high 12 rebounds.

Maine Maritime improves to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the NAC, while the Pilgrims fall to 5-4 and 2-1 in conference play. The Mariners will host Colby-Sawyer College tomorrow at 1:00 pm, and New England College will travel to play Husson University.
